2. Step 2 - The material

Here you have a few choices. Linen or cotton. Linen is the best of the best. Oil primed Linen canvases are intended for oil paintings and they are highly durable, lasting up to five times longer than cotton. As such they are more expensive than cotton. Cotton canvases are still great for the beginner as well as the professionaland lend themselves well to acrylics as well as oils.
The cotton pre-stretched canvases are usually primed so they are ready to paint, however you can choose to gesso them for a smoother finish.

3. Step 3 - Construction

Stretched canvases are constructed in two ways that need to be considered for your needs. Staples will either be on the sides or at the back. If you intend to remove your painting from the stretcher bars in order to frame it, the stapled sided canvas will be fine for your needs. If you would like to hang your painting on the wall without a frame, then the "Gallery wrapped" or "Exhibition Canvases" with the staples in the back, are the ones you'll need.

4. Step 4 - Profile
The next most important consideration after material and construction is profile. Profile refers to how deep the canvas is. Everytime I visit the art store, I see more and more profile selections, anywhere from 1/2 inch up to 2 inches. The reason to consider profile is because it can add depth to your painting. A popular trend is to extend the subject matter of the painting around the sides of the painting. This adds an interesting dimmension when viewed from the side, as most paintings will be, espescially if the hanging space is large. So you may wish to go for a wider profile. If you have a frame in mind that you wish to fill without taking the painting off the stretcher bar, then you will want to stick to the smaller profile as per your measurements, as you don't want the painting to stick out past the frame.

5. Step 5 - Size
Finally we get to size. Referring to your list, think about what kind of statement you want to make with your painting. Do you want something dynamic that makes a statement and leaps off the wall? Go for something large and blocky like a 36X40 with a wide profile. Do you want something streamlined and minimalist? How about something long and narrow with a small profile? These types of canvases are good for panoramic landscape views or set vertical for long stemmed flowers or giraffe necks. How about a small or even a tiny canvas. These you can put similar scenes or themes on them for grouping together. The sky (and your creativity and imagination) are the limits when it comes to size.

6. Step 6 Choose a selection
The best thing to do is to choose a selection of canvases for when the mood strikes (and the muse) you'll be ready. If you are anything like me, you'll have canvases for specific projects and canvases for "maybes" and for "whims" just because the shape and size is inspiring in some way, even though you'll have no idea what you'll do. Its always fun having supplies just for those moments when you want to let loose.

Tips & Warnings
When buying more than one canvas becareful how you store it. Stacking canvases of different sizes on top of each other can lead to permanent indents over time or can make the canvas stretch out.
